How Are Jackknifing Accidents Caused?

Jackknifing occurs when the trailer end of the truck whips around towards the front, giving the vehicle the appearance of an open jackknife. When the weight inside of a truck trailer is distributed unevenly, or the trailer is loaded with too much weight, it could cause the truck to jackknife.

Trucking companies are held to a specific set of regulations designed to keep truck drivers, and everyone else on the road, safe. However, if company owners, managers, or drivers ignore these rules, trucks may be incorrectly loaded or overloaded. When a large truck hits the breaks, too much weight in the rear could cause the trailer to fall forward, swing sideways, or even roll. In any of these situations, serious damage and injuries could occur.

Common causes of jackknifing accidents include:

  • Sudden stops or rushed turns
  • Wet or icy roads
  • Untrained or poorly qualified drivers
  • Improperly loaded trailers or truck beds

Any of these issues can result in a hazardous, even deadly trucking accident. If you were injured in an accident with a jackknifing truck, you may be eligible for compensation.
